Desmond Miles is a fictional character from Ubisoft's Assassin'southward Creed video game franchise. Introduced equally the protagonist of the mod-day portion of the first game, he has maintained this role for the next four installments, with his journeying and development making upwardly the frame story that unites the outset v Assassin's Creed games.[i] [2] [iii] Desmond has too been referenced or featured in a smaller capacity in subsequent games and literary works within the franchise. He is voiced by actor Nolan North[4] [five] and modeled after Canadian fashion model Francisco Randez.[6] Desmond's grapheme has received a mixed reception.
Desmond is a descendant of a long line of of import characters throughout the series, including Adam,[seven] [8] Aquilus,[9] [10] [eleven] Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad,[12] Ezio Auditore da Firenze,[xiii] [fourteen] [15] [16] Edward Kenway,[17] [18] Haytham Kenway[19] [20] [21] [22] and Ratonhnhaké:ton / Connor.[23] [24] [25] Born into the ancient Assassin Brotherhood and raised to continue his family'south heritage as an Assassin, Desmond eventually runs away from domicile to seek a better life, and becomes a bartender in New York City. However, he is captured by the Templar Social club, who force him to experience the memories of his ancestors, all of them Assassins throughout history, through a machine called the "Animus" so that they may locate powerful artifacts called "Pieces of Eden". Afterwards escaping from the Templars with the Assassins' help, Desmond learns about his destiny to save humanity from an impending solar flare, and continues to explore his ancestors' memories to find the applied science of a precursor race called the Isu, who were wiped out past a similar disaster. Although Desmond sacrifices himself to cease the solar flare in Assassin'southward Creed III, his legacy plays a major role in some of the subsequent games, and his mind is revealed to still exist alive in a different airplane of being in Assassinator's Creed Valhalla.
Conception [edit]
According to his voice role player Nolan Due north, the original plan for Desmond would be that he would feature in six respective games acquiring the skills of his Assassin ancestors to become 'The Ultimate Assassinator',[26] and would exist able to fourth dimension-travel between different time periods. North became greatly interested in the concept simply it was unfortunately scrapped. Calculation upon this, North personally noted Desmond as a 'tedious' protagonist who ultimately had no direction to go forrad, describing the character as 'a fork in the route'. He has been defined as a MacGuffin: "he exists to move the story frontwards, merely he provides lilliputian substance".[3]
Appearances [edit]
Assassin'south Creed [edit]
In the get-go game in the series, Desmond leads a uncomplicated life as a bartender in New York City.[three] In order to hibernate his identity, he lives under causeless names and uses only cash to protect himself. All the same, considering his ancestors were well-known Assassins, he is eventually tracked down and captured by Abstergo Industries, a front for the modern-twenty-four hours Templar Order.[3] In one case inside Abstergo'due south facility in Rome, Italian republic, Desmond is forced to enter the Animus, which allows him to relive the memories of his ancestors stored in his Dna.[3] It enables him to separate Desmond'southward consciousness from his torso and to infuse his mind with his ancestors,[three] all under the watch of Abstergo scientist Dr. Warren Vidic and his assistant Lucy Stillman.[27] They explicate that they are searching the memories of Desmond's ancestors, specifically those of Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad (1165–1257; Syria),[3] for specific data, which they refuse to disclose.[28] Without much choice, Desmond begrudgingly agrees to assistance them.
After recovering the information for which Vidic was searching—a map showing the locations of diverse "Pieces of Eden", artifacts with the ability to control humans believed to accept been created by a Precursor race— Abstergo'southward executives order Desmond to exist killed. Lucy'due south quick thinking saves him, every bit she persuades Vidic to go on him live until they know he is of no further use. Upon returning to his room, Desmond, suffering from the "Haemorrhage Effect" due to prolonged exposure to the Animus, discovers he has gained Altaïr's "Hawkeye Vision". This allows him to discern friend from foe and to read cryptic messages written on walls and floors by Subject 16, the previous Animus exam bailiwick that Lucy and Vidic occasionally mention.
Assassin'southward Creed II [edit]
Assassin'southward Creed II continues from where the commencement game left off, every bit Desmond escapes from the Abstergo facility with the aid of Lucy, who is an undercover Assassinator in Abstergo. He enters the Counterinsurgency 2.0, supervised by Lucy and her team of assassins Shaun Hastings and Rebecca Crane, to be quickly trained as an Assassin via the Haemorrhage Effect. He relives the memories of Ezio Auditore da Firenze (1459-1524; Italy),[three] his ancestor from the Renaissance. After successfully navigating Ezio's early memories, Desmond is extracted from the Counterinsurgency to avert the mental degradation that Subject 16 suffered as a side-event of the Bleeding Event. Shortly after extraction, Desmond flashes back to one of Altaïr'south memories, despite non existence linked to the Counterinsurgency. Desmond learns of Altaïr'southward lover Maria Thorpe, a former Templar used every bit a decoy by Robert de Sablé. Equally Altaïr leaves, Desmond wonders why he is not post-obit the Assassinator; instead, he moves towards Maria and enters her womb, showing that Altaïr'southward kid— another of Desmond's ancestors—has just been conceived.
Later spending more than time in Counterinsurgency 2.0, Desmond begins to adjust to his newly adult skills and becomes active and expert fighter, similarly to Ezio. The last segment of Ezio's memories brings an astonished Ezio and Desmond to a futuristic chamber underneath the Sistine Chapel, where they are met by a hologram of Minerva, a member of the Precursor race that created humanity and the Pieces of Eden known as the Beginning Civilization. Minerva addresses Desmond by proper noun, knowing that he is reliving Ezio'south memories, and talks well-nigh a cataclysm that wiped ou most of her race tens of thousands of years ago, and which is set to occur again by the cease of that year if Desmond does not prevent it. Desmond is then pulled from the Animus equally Abstergo discovers their hideout. The team escapes; Desmond using the skills acquired from the Haemorrhage Effect to repel Abstergo'due south forces. Desmond enters the Animus while in transit, knowing Ezio and perhaps Subject 16 may accept the answers they seek.
Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood [edit]
In Assassinator's Creed: Brotherhood, Desmond, Lucy, Shaun, and Rebecca make it at Monteriggioni, where they gear up up a safe house in the Villa Auditore'southward sanctuary. Desmond re-enters the Animus two.0 to notice the location of the Apple of Eden obtained by Ezio, hoping to utilise the artifact to defeat the Templars and end the cataclysm Minerva warned Desmond about. Through Ezio's memories, Desmond and the others larn the Apple is hidden under the Colosseum and head there to retrieve it. Desmond takes the Apple, and through it, Juno, some other Outset Civilization member, takes command of his body and forces him to stab Lucy, claiming that she would have betrayed him if he immune her to back-trail him any further. Desmond then falls into a coma, and is placed dorsum into the Animus by ii unknown Assassins in a bid to preserve his consciousness.
Assassin's Creed: Revelations [edit]
In Assassin's Creed: Revelations, Desmond awakens within the Blackness Room, a "condom manner" area for the Counterinsurgency. In the Black Room'south "Animus Island", he meets the digital construct of Subject 16, Dirt Kaczmarek, who explains that Desmond must notice a memory that links him with Altaïr and Ezio so he can reintegrate his shattered subconscious and awaken from his coma. While in this state, Desmond can hear conversations between Shaun, Rebecca, and his father, William Miles. When the Counterinsurgency begins to delete Counterinsurgency Island, Dirt sacrifices himself to foreclose Desmond'south consciousness from being deleted, but not before transferring his own genetic memories onto Desmond. Later on, Desmond is approached past Jupiter, a member of the First Civilisation, who tells him where to find the Thou Temple that contains well-nigh of the data collected by his race over the years, so that he may forbid the cataclysmic solar flare set to occur in a few weeks. After enkindling from his coma, Desmond sees Shaun, Rebecca, and William sitting around him. When his male parent asks if he is alright, Desmond simply states that he knows what they accept to practise.[29]
While in the Black Room, at that place are five sequences where Desmond talks virtually his life prior to being captured by Abstergo. In Desmond Sequence one, he expresses regret for running abroad from "The Farm", where he grew up in secrecy among other Assassins, and also wishes that he could repent to his parents. In Desmond Sequences ii and three, Desmond explains his early life on the Farm and the training he went through. He also describes his escape, which happened at the historic period of xvi. He ran away into the Black Hills, before running into girls from Illinois who collection him to Chicago. Subsequently this, he moved to New York Metropolis. During Desmond Sequence four, Desmond talks of his life in New York, and the job he got at a high-end bar. In the terminal sequence, Desmond Sequence 5, Desmond describes how Abstergo eventually establish him in 2012 and how much he regretted non taking his parents' warnings and training more seriously, and finally accepts his role as an Assassin.
In The Lost Archive DLC, Desmond, during his time in the Animus, unwillingly experiences Clay'southward memories prior to his death. He learns that Clay used to be an Assassin, and that he was tasked with infiltrating Abstergo to acquire what Warren Vidic hoped to achieve by accessing the memories of different Assassins. Lucy, who had infiltrated Abstergo years prior, was to safely extract Dirt after his mission was complete. Still, Dirt eventually discovered that Lucy had secretly betrayed the Assassins and joined the Templar cause, and that Vidic ordered her to take Desmond to a place where he would experience rubber, and so that she could analyze the memories of his ancestors and discover Ezio's Apple tree of Eden; Abstergo would and then steal the Apple from the Assassins and use it control the unabridged planet through a satellite. When Lucy discovered that Clay had learned about her treachery, she imprisoned him at the Abstergo facility, where Clay was eventually driven to insanity and took his own life.
Assassin's Creed III [edit]
In Assassinator'southward Creed III, Desmond, who is noticeably thinner and frail after a long fourth dimension in Animus, arrives at the Grand Temple of the Commencement Civilisation, located in a cavern system in New York, and accesses it using Ezio's Apple tree of Eden. With the help of his begetter and friends, Desmond relives the memories of his ancestors Haytham Kenway (1725–1781; Kingdom of Great Great britain) and Ratonhnhaké:ton / Connor (1756–unknown; Colonial America) using the new Animus iii.0,[3] hoping to find the Central to the Temple's Central Vault. Occasionally, Desmond leaves the Animus to explore the Temple and speak with Juno, who tells him more of her race'south history, every bit well as to retrieve "batteries", which are too required to access the Key Vault. While searching for the batteries in Manhattan and São Paulo, Brazil, Desmond is hunted by Daniel Cross, a Templar agent dispatched by Abstergo who was responsible for the purge of nearly of the Assassin Alliance a decade prior. After William is captured while trying to recover the last bombardment, Desmond storms Abstergo'due south headquarters in Rome, kills Cross and Warren Vidic, and rescues his father.
After finding the Key, Desmond and his allies enter the Central Vault, where Minerva and Juno appear to speak with Desmond. Minerva warns Desmond that if he touches the pedestal in the centre of the room, he will be killed and Juno will be released, allowing her to conquer humanity, but the world will be saved. Juno shows Desmond how his divinity among the survivors of the catastrophe would end with the globe going through some other bicycle of political and religious war. Desmond ultimately decides to utilize the device and save the world, believing it has a better adventure of fighting Juno. While Shaun, Rebecca, and William exit the Temple, Desmond touches the pedestal and releases Juno, dying in the process.
According to lead designer Steve Masters, Desmond'south story ends in Assassins Creed III: "What we're trying to practice is bring some certitude to Desmond'southward story. To actually wrap up what you've opened and experienced with him." The creative managing director of the series, Jean Guesdon, said that Desmond is an important character in the Assassin'southward Creed series, and would be playing an important part in the sequel.[thirty]
Assassin'due south Creed 4: Black Flag [edit]
Despite his physical death, Desmond is still a powerful asset for the Templars and Assassins in Assassin's Creed Iv: Black Flag. Shortly after Desmond's death, a sample recovery team from Abstergo is sent to collect his body and samples for the new Sample 17. Desmond's Dna is stored in Abstergo Entertainment's servers, where a crew of analysts is tasked with reliving his copied genetic memories and learning about his ancestors. One of them, the actor graphic symbol, is tasked with reliving the memories of Edward Kenway (1693–1735; Wales), a pirate who lived during the Golden Historic period of Piracy and eventual member of the Assassin Brotherhood, as well as the male parent of Haytham Kenway and gramps of Connor. While this is ostensibly to gather information for an Counterinsurgency-powered interactive feature film starring Edward, in reality Abstergo seeks to observe the Observatory, a Start Civilisation construction hosting an advanced tracking device and several vials of Beginning Civilization's blood samples.
The annotator steals and sends back to the Assassins several recordings left by Desmond detailing his initial doubts of leaving the Subcontract, his acceptance of the part he had been chosen to play, and his love for his parents. Because Abstergo can now collect anyone's genetic memories without having to apply blood-related analysts, Desmond's torso gives Abstergo total knowledge about his family life.
Assassinator's Creed Syndicate [edit]
In 2015, during the events of Assassin'due south Creed Syndicate, a boy named Elijah is brought by his mother to an Abstergo clinic in New York City. Abstergo analysts discover that the boy shares exactly the same patrilineal lineage of Desmond Miles, indicating that he may have been unknowingly conceived by Desmond a few years afterwards his escape from the Farm. On top of that, it is as well revealed that the boy is a Sage, a mod-day reincarnation of a Get-go Civilization member. An Abstergo researcher proposes to kidnap the boy and conduct vivisection on him. All the same, some other researcher, Isabelle Ardant, opposes the idea, claiming that it would be better to abduct the boy when he is older and place him in the Counterinsurgency for 50 years so that Abstergo can study his lineage.
Assassin's Creed Valhalla [edit]
In Assassin'due south Creed Valhalla, it is revealed that, while Desmond's phyisical form was killed when he activated the Starting time Culture towers in 2012 to save the Earth, his mind was transported into a reckoner simulation created past the Showtime Civilisation known as "The Greyness". During his time in that location, he forgot his original identiy and was transformed into a existence of light called The Reader. In 2020, the Assassin Layla Hassan enteres the Grey via a supercomputer from a First Civilization temple in Norway in an attempt to slow the magnetism of the global aurora borealis device. Hither, Layla meets the Reader and shows him more possibilities and calculations based on timelines he had not explored. The Reader so tells Layla she has a minute to alive equally the radiation from the bedroom is killing her physical torso. Layla decides to stay in the Greyness with the Reader and explore more timelines.
